I am very happy to hear that ICL is launching a remote semester and happy to help. I am so glad the connection with WISE was fruitful. A shout out to Karl @ WISE and thanks to Heather from CALL at Keene State.

Hi Claire,

Everything here is well and I hope with you too! We will be Zooming here starting 13 July. Trying five courses starting that week. Karl at WISE has been a life saver. He gave us so many Zoom tips! I even attended a Zoom class with at WISE, which had 72 people in it. Truly amazing!

Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi Heather, We are all volunteer and we were to start Spring term (20 courses) on Mar 30. The campus shutdown the week before we were to start.

I have been thinking online courses for about a year but never took any action. Now is time to re-evalute. I many ideas to research so looking for what others have tried or are using. I hope we can get some more traffic on the forum about Distance Learning.

Thanks for your post and I hope to get in touch soon,

Art

Hi Claire, Thanks for the reply. Zoom is on my list to look into. I may pass this onto our course leaders.

Be Safe,

Hi Art,

Idea : Encore Boston created virtual Coffee & Conversation meetups designed to keep members connected. Limited to 8 spots in each of four sessions , Encore also suggested a few "topics" to discuss.

ZOOM offers a free platform to small groups. The meetings are limited to 45 minutes each but are a great way to connect with your members. Members can connect using ZOOM through phone, tablet, laptop or desk top. https://zoom.us/

Wishing you the best,

Hi Art,
These are indeed crazy times. I coordinate a program of about 600 members affiliated with Keene State College in NH. We are a little different from most LLIs in that we are not volunteer-run. I'm a paid KSC staff member with other program responsibilities. and our faculty are paid $500 per eight week semester. We began our CALL semester on 3/13 (we only meet on Fridays), met once, and were unable to return to campus. On 3/13 we were offering 42 classes to 481 members. We transitioned 29 of our classes to remote learning and started again last Friday with 296 students. Faculty are using various means to connect - some just emailed notes, some narrated PowerPoints, and quite a few live Zoom sessions. I'm happy to connect with you to share more if you would like, just shoot me an email - Heather ([email protected]).

Any ideas or suggestions about how we can be offering some of our courses online during this period 'stay at home'? We are a small LLI and offer a curriculum in one of the college classrooms (now restricted). We have high speed access to Internet and use a Windows 10 computer and an overhead projector. We also have an plugin camera and microphone.

Perhaps you can give us some ideas about how we can offer some 'learning' material to our members at home? If you care to plug into this thread, we are interested in what resources would be required to do something like this, even on a limited basis. Things like hardware, software, web sites, services, etc.

Please share your experiences, suggestions and/or opinions. Perhaps we could create a category on this board that may help others with the same questions?

Thanks,

Art
